Under-sink organizers that actually hold up

The space under a kitchen sink is where good intentions go to die. A bottle of dish soap tips over, a sponge gets lost, and within a week the cabinet looks exactly like it did before you "organized" it. The right organizer has to do two things at once: hold weight without warping and survive being dragged in and out to reach the pipes in the back.

What actually matters

Most under-sink organizers are injection-molded plastic trays. The differences come down to three things we learned the hard way:

• Wall thickness and ribbing. A flat, thin tray flexes under a single 32-ounce bottle of cleaner. Look for ribs or a honeycomb underside — that's what stops the sag.
• Clearance. The cabinet has a P-trap and drain pipe in the middle. A solid two-tier unit almost never fits around them. Sliding drawers or a U-shaped tray do.
• Feet or no feet. Raised feet keep the tray out of condensation that collects on the cabinet floor. This sounds minor and turns out to be the main reason some trays warp.

The verdict

For a single-door cabinet under a typical sink, a U-shaped two-tier organizer with a ribbed base is the one that holds up. The tray style that fails fastest is the flat, footless single shelf — it warps within days once a heavy bottle lives on one end.

Cheaper is not always worse here: a $15 ribbed tray outperformed a $40 "premium" unit that had no structural ribbing. Price is a poor signal; construction is the signal.

What we'd skip

Avoid organizers that hang from the cabinet door unless the door is solid wood and the hinges are rated for the extra weight. On particleboard doors — which is most rental cabinets — the extra load pulls the hinge screws loose within a month.
