Silverware organizers that actually fit your drawer

A silverware organizer is the one drawer upgrade you buy once and forget — until it's a quarter-inch too wide, slides every time you open the drawer, and leaves half your cutlery in a jumble anyway. We loaded three cutlery trays into the same drawer to see what actually matters.

What actually matters

• Fit over looks. Measure the inside width of your drawer before you buy. A tray sized for a "standard" drawer either leaves a gap or jams the rails.
• Expandable beats fixed. A tray that adjusts from about 13 to 20 inches fits most real drawers and moves with you when you reorganize.
• Material and grip. Bamboo looks like furniture but needs a non-slip base or a liner. Plastic is lighter and easier to sanitize, but it slides more on a smooth drawer.

What we found

• The expandable bamboo tray held its tension after weeks of daily opening and wiped clean without staining — the honest winner.
• An extra-large plastic tray swallowed a 22-inch drawer and held a full 12-person flatware set, but slid until we added a drawer liner.
• A fixed, one-size tray wasted two inches of drawer and jammed against the rails every time it shifted.

The verdict

For a standard kitchen drawer, an expandable bamboo organizer in the 13-to-20-inch range is the one that earns its place. If your drawer is extra wide, go with the extra-large plastic tray and add a drawer liner so it stays put.
