Shower head filters that actually remove chlorine

A shower filter is the cheapest upgrade that promises to fix dry skin and brittle hair — and it is also the easiest to fake. Most are a plastic shell around a thin wad of media that stops doing anything after a month, while the pressure drops enough that you notice every morning. We ran an inline filter and a full filtered head side by side on the same shower arm to see what actually works.

What actually matters

• The media, not the marketing. What removes chlorine is activated carbon plus calcium sulfite (or KDF). A 15-stage or 20-stage label means nothing if the cartridge is mostly plastic beads.
• Pressure loss. A filter that clogs or is packed too tightly turns your shower into a drizzle. The good ones lose almost nothing at standard flow.
• Fit and replacement. An inline filter has to clear your wall and match your shower arm thread, and the cartridge has to be cheap enough that you actually replace it on schedule.

What we found

• A heavy-duty inline filter with carbon and calcium sulfite was the honest winner — visible chlorine smell was gone within a day and pressure stayed strong.
• A full filtered shower head set was the best "swap the whole thing" option, adding a fresher spray while filtering, though the head itself is mostly plastic.
• Cheap single-media filters did nothing measurable after week one and were the first to leak at the threads.

The verdict

For most people, a heavy-duty inline filter that uses activated carbon and calcium sulfite is the one that earns its money — it installs in minutes, keeps your existing head, and you can actually smell the difference. If your head is old anyway, a filtered shower head set is a fine two-birds upgrade. Skip anything that only lists "stage count" and not the media inside.
