A paper towel holder looks like the most forgettable purchase in the kitchen — a bar under a cabinet. Until you give the roll a hard yank and the whole thing clatters onto the counter. The difference between a good one and a bad one shows up within days: an adhesive pad that peels away, a bar that spins too freely, or a roll that rubs against the cabinet door every time you grab a sheet.

What actually matters

• Mount method. Adhesive is tool-free but only as strong as the surface and the pad's weight rating. Screws hold forever but put holes in the cabinet. For rentals and most kitchens, a wide adhesive pad on clean, dry cabinet underside wins.
• Bar clearance. If the bar sits too close to the cabinet, the full roll catches and tears instead of spinning. You want real clearance so a fresh, fat roll turns freely.
• Material. Stainless steel (or a genuinely rust-resistant coated metal) survives the humidity above a sink. Cheap chrome-plated wire rusts first at the joints, exactly where the bar meets the bracket.

What we found

• The self-adhesive stainless holder stuck to the underside of a cabinet and held a full roll through two weeks of daily yanking without budging — the honest winner for anyone who won't drill.
• The same holder in a lighter finish gripped identically and cost a little more purely for the look.
• A drill-only chrome model was solid, but the holes it demanded weren't worth it for most people when the adhesive version held just as well.

The verdict

For most kitchens, a self-adhesive stainless-steel under-cabinet holder with a wide mounting pad is the one that earns its spot — and it leaves the cabinet untouched. Skip anything with a tiny adhesive strip, and skip drilling unless you own the place and want it permanent.
