Laundry hampers that don't tip over

A laundry sorter spends its life being pulled, loaded unevenly, and shoved against the washer. The bad ones reveal themselves fast: a frame that twists when you roll it, bags that sag and spill, and a three-bag cart that pitches forward the moment one bag is heavier than the other two. We ran sorters side by side to see what actually keeps them planted.

What actually matters

• Frame rigidity. A solid metal frame with a rear crossbar is what stops a three-bag sorter from racking sideways. Cheap tubular frames twist under a full load and start leaning within a month.
• Wheels. Lockable casters matter more than they look — a sorter that rolls while you're loading it is the one that tips. You want at least two locking wheels.
• Bags. Removable bags with handles are the difference between carrying laundry to the machine and dragging the whole cart across the floor.

What we found

• The chrome three-bag cart stood solid even with one full bag and two empty — the rear support bar is what earns its keep.
• A pull-out bag sorter with a top shelf stayed planted thanks to a wider, heavier base, and the flat top gave us a place for detergent.
• A folding fabric sorter was cheapest but wobbled the second it was loaded lopsided and needed to be re-squared constantly.

The verdict

For a laundry room, a three-bag sorter on a rigid frame with lockable casters and removable bags is the one that doesn't tip. Skip flimsy folding frames and anything without a locking wheel — if it can roll while you load it, it will.
