We ran two budget stick vacs against the same floors to find out what $200 actually gets you.

What actually matters

• Runtime honesty. Advertised minutes are measured on the lowest power setting on hard floor. On the "max" mode that actually picks up crumbs from a rug, most budget vacs last under 15 minutes.
• Edge pickup, not peak suction. The spec-sheet KPA number is marketing. What matters is whether the floor head gets the dust line along baseboards without you crawling behind with a handheld.
• Hair wrap. If you have a pet or long hair, an anti-tangle brush roller is the difference between emptying the bin and spending ten minutes cutting hair off a roller with scissors.

What we found

• A name-brand 20V stick vac was the honest all-rounder: real runtime, LED floor lights that show dust, and an anti-tangle roller that stayed clean after a week of dog-hair duty.
• A high-KPA budget vac pulled hard on hard floors but was noticeably heavier in the wrist, and its advertised "45 minute" runtime dropped fast the moment you left eco mode.
• The sub-$60 no-name tier we'd skip entirely — weak edges, batteries that sagged within a month in earlier tests, and a dust cup that clogged on pet hair.

The verdict

Under $200, you are choosing between a refined, name-brand stick vac with real anti-tangle and usable runtime, and a high-suction bargain that is heavier and shorter-lived on high power. For daily quick cleans, the name-brand 20V model is the one that earns its spot by the door.
