A cable box looks like the easiest fix in the house: drop the power strip inside, close the lid, and the mess is gone. The catch shows up fast — a box that is too small for your strip, a lid that pops open when the cord bundle pushes back, or slots that let every wire spill out the sides anyway. We ran two popular boxes side by side to see what actually hides the mess and what just moves it.

What actually matters

• Interior size before looks. Measure your power strip with plugs attached, not just the strip. Most strips with a couple of chunky adapters are fatter than you think, and a tight fit means the lid won't close.
• Entry slots that work. A good box has generous openings on both ends so cords come and go without kinking, and a lid that still seats over a full bundle.
• Where it lives. On a desk you want a lid you can rest a phone or a small plant on; on the floor you want a box that stays put and doesn't crack when stepped on.

What we found

• The wood-lid box swallowed a six-outlet strip plus two wall adapters and still closed flush — the honest winner for a desk.
• The large floor box held the most cable but sits better behind furniture than in plain sight; its matte finish hides scuffs.
• A too-small budget box (not recommended) forced us to unplug an adapter just to shut the lid, which defeats the whole point.

The verdict

For a desk or TV stand, a box with a real interior — roughly 12 inches long and a lid that seats over a full bundle — plus generous end slots is the one that earns its spot. Skip anything you have to unplug to close; that is a box that stores your cords, not one that hides them.
